Interaction Engineering: The Stick

The goal was to develop a physical interface using phidgets and flash.  We decided to make a smart device to aid the blind. Utilizing cardboard, a wood stick, and phidgets connected with a simple flash application, we were able to demonstrate during the final presentation a more tangible idea of what the product might look like.  We also evaluated materials, technology, and specifications.

What are phidgets? They are a set of “plug and play” building blocks for low cost USB sensing and control from your PC.  Together with a software such as MAX MSP or Flash, a prototype can be built quickly in order to convey an idea.  For this project we used a cardboard tube and a wooden stick with the phidgets attached; in a week we had a good way of showing what the idea was all about!

We also worked out the details of the product by creating a persona, scouting similar products in the market, and performing a quick evaluation.
